The City is a multimedia installation by students and faculty of Studio Art Centers International (SACI), Florence, Italy. The project was coordinated and directed by Roberto Bocci and exhibited at the "Park of the Future" in occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, the Westergasfabriek; Amsterdam, Holland (April12-16, 1999).This piece was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Studio Art Centers International project. The City is a multimedia installation that incorporates electronic media and traditional fine arts. The relationship between natural and urban environments are investigated. The public and the private, and the effects of human intervention on nature informs The City. When installed, The City seeks to recreate an urban microcosm that springs form the imagination of artist from different countries and cultural backgrounds.

On the entrance walls of the installation post-baccalaureate graduate students created a large text based graffiti. The "text of the graffiti was in-keeping with the theme of the installation. Inside the installation two video rear projection screens were installed. Video and interactive sequences were projected on the two screens to create visual dichotomies between natural type landscapes and urban environments.

The City installation is the result of a truly collaborative and team effort to include the talent and experience of invited artists, faculty and of students. The piece is also conceived to merge scientific, technological and fine arts practices. In the installation the video projections were fed by the video output of two synchronized Macintosh computers. The computer software for The City was created in Macromedia Director by Luca Tanzini and Roberto Bocci.
